Recently my wife and I wanted to try a restaurant on North Rush Street in Chicago. It was early in the dinner hour on a warm Saturday evening and they had an open table right on Rush Street. Nobody was waiting but the snooty hostess wouldn’t let us have it as the table was for four. Half the fun of dining out in this area during nice weather is sitting along Rush Street and watching the array of people who parade by.
The previous Saturday we had eaten outside at a ...

Many registered reps selling 401(k) plans in the small to mid-sized market would have you believe that an all American Funds menu is the ideal answer for your company’s 401(k) plan.
To be clear, I have enormous respect and admiration for American Funds as a fund family. They offer a number of excellent funds. They have a deep management/research group. I use several of their funds in 401(k) plan line-ups and in the accounts of some of my individual clients (no-load ...

One of the common mistakes investors make is that when the equities market declines they exit the market and dump their assets into a money market account. This can be a big mistake in 401(k) for two reasons.
Money Markets are currently paying a very meager interest rate. Many times below 2/10 of a percent. Unfortunately most 401(k) plans have expenses that can be over 1 percent. This means that by keeping an allocation in a Money Market account most 401(k) investors actually lose ...

A new benchmarking tool has recently become available to allow retirement plan participants, as well as retirement plan sponsors, to see how their plan is benchmarked or compared against plans of their peers.
Brightscope.com reviews the data that is on file with the government about the plan and then rates six different components of the plan including; plan cost, company generosity, investment menu quality, participation rate, salary deferrals and account balances. Using a proprietary algorithm the company then rates how well the plan is ...

When a young child misbehaves, the parent takes action to correct the inappropriate behavior and encourages the better behavior. Working with adults when dealing with their 401(k) or other investments is a bit the same. The only problem is that inappropriate investment behavior not only impacts the retirement income of the participant but can also impact the beneficiaries.
Here are the four most common ways to “misbehave” relative to your 401(k).

Chase the returns of funds after the returns have already happened. What often occurs ...

A client recently remarked that she was happy about the choices in her 401(k) but did not know which classes of shares were being offered. She was shocked to learn that she was paying commissions on every contribution.
Many mutual funds have 4 to 6 different offerings of the same fund, all with different costs and fees and commissions. Here is a list of common classes.
A class shares typically require upfront commissions, usually between 1% and
5%, commonly referred to as a “sales-load.” These shares ...
